Formal Response & Notice of Appeal
Dear Mark and Members of the Chicago DSA Executive Committee,
I am writing in formal response to your notice stating that the Executive Committee (EC) of Chicago DSA has voted to suspend my membership and ban me from participating in chapter activities for two years.
Please take formal notice that this disciplinary action is procedurally void ab initio under DSA's Unified Grievance Policy (UGP) and unenforceable under Illinois law governing voluntary associations (Gilyana v. Assyrian American Ass'n, 2015 IL App (1st) 150460). Furthermore, every one of the six conclusory allegations listed in your email is factually false, outside an HGO's jurisdiction, or an impermissible attempt to punish protected political speech, technical administration, and ESL communication under the guise of personal conduct.
I. Procedural & Legal Violations Rendering the Suspension Void
Your investigation and notice violate mandatory provisions of the Unified Grievance Policy:
- 1. Failure to Provide Written Notice & Response Window (UGP §§ 4.2.1, 7.3.1): Accused members are entitled to formal written notice of specific charges and 7 to 14 days to respond before an investigation proceeds. I received only a single informal phone call where major charges (such as the unspecified "congressional campaign" allegation) were never mentioned.
- 2. Failure to Transmit HGO Investigative Report (UGP § 7.5.3): Submitting a secret report to the Executive Committee without providing a copy to the accused member violates fundamental fairness.
- 3. Failure to Provide Written Adjudication & Findings (UGP §§ 4.2.5, 7.6.7): The Executive Committee must issue a formal written adjudication with factual findings within 3 days. Six one-line bullet points summarizing your own report do not suffice.
- 4. Improper Policing of Political Conduct (UGP Preamble & § 13.5.3): HGOs have zero jurisdiction over political conduct, electoral strategy, or commission work.
II. Point-by-Point Rebuttal of Allegations
-
1.
Allegation of "Maintaining Multiple Memberships"
Factually False. I maintain residences in Chicago, IL, and Arnold/San Carlos, CA. Due to National DSA's broken website and inability to update expired credit cards or multi-state profiles, standard renewal forms were the only accessible way to pay dues in good standing.
-
2.
Allegation of "Employing AI Services in Internal Communications"
Not a Violation. LLMs assist a member raised in an ESL household. Socialists should not fear mathematics or software tools; our focus belongs on regulating corporate infrastructure and labor conditions, not punishing members for math-based writing tools.
-
3.
Allegation of "Unauthorized Website & Data Capture"
False & Defamatory. As a duly appointed member of the DSA National Political Education Commission (NPEC) and elected administrator of its internal election, the website was created strictly to carry out an official mandate, failing UGP preponderance standards and exposing the chapter to Illinois defamation liability.
-
4.
Allegation of "Misrepresenting Relationship with DSA"
No Notice & False. Never raised during our call. My 47th Ward campaign (adam47.com) is intentionally declining Chicago DSA's endorsement due to chapter compliance issues and strained public standing.
-
5.
Allegation of "Not Exercising Consideration"
Discriminatory ESL Penalization. Raised by a Polish grandmother (ESL speaker), my direct syntax reflects linguistic background, not malice. Enforcing an "English-only" stylistic standard violates UGP non-discrimination commitments and Illinois civil rights norms.
-
6.
Allegation of "Accusing Members Rather Than Offering Analysis"
Protected Political Analysis. Offering empirical field analysis (e.g., analyzing Francesca Hong's primary campaign and the need for Milwaukee poll-passing operations) is core political speech, not harassment.
III. Formal Demands & Notice of Appeal
Pursuant to UGP §§ 4.2, 7.5.3, 7.6.7, 9, and the Illinois Not For Profit Corporation Act (805 ILCS 105/107.75), I demand within 3 business days:
- 1.Full HGO Investigative Report and initial complaints (UGP § 7.5.3).
- 2.Executive Committee Written Adjudication, factual findings, and recorded vote (805 ILCS 105/107.75).
- 3.Formal Notice of Appeal to the NPC under UGP §§ 9.1–9.3 on grounds of lack of violation, severe procedural error, and disproportionate penalty.

Good Afternoon Adam,
I am reaching out in my role as Chicago DSA's Harassment Grievance Officer (HGO) to let you know that a complaint has been filed regarding your communication with members of Milwaukee DSA... As an accused member, you are asked to respond within seven (7) days... In the meantime, I ask that you refrain from contacting other chapters or participating in digital organizing spaces...
Good evening Mark,
I am writing in response to your email regarding the complaint filed by the Milwaukee DSA chapter. I cannot comply with your requests because the Chicago chapter has no jurisdiction or authority over me, my campaign or affiliates... As an At-Large member, Chicago DSA has no standing over my organizing activities... Please consider this the last electronic message you will be receiving from me due to the prevalence of AI. Please call me anytime or set an in-person meeting using this link: pocz.cc/cal
[Signed: Adam Cornelius, [retired] CPA, NPEC, National Tech Board, Board-Governor Arnold CA, etc.]
Hi Adam,
Thank you for the call. To reiterate, the complaint was raised to our chapter because you represented yourself as someone from Chicago...
[Follow-up Notice:] I am writing to notify you that the Executive Committee of Chicago DSA has decided to suspend your membership and ban you from participation in chapter activities for a period of two years... based on six findings: maintaining multiple memberships, employing AI services in internal communications, creating an unauthorized data-capturing website (NPEC), misrepresenting relationship with DSA in a congressional campaign, not exercising consideration in digital communications, and accusing members rather than offering analysis.
